September is National Literacy Month, a perfect time to highlight the joy and importance of reading in building strong communication skills. At Marigold Speech & Co, we know that books do more than tell stories—they spark conversations, expand vocabulary, and create lasting connections between children and caregivers. To celebrate, we’re shining a spotlight on our very own team members and their favorite books. From timeless classics to new favorites, each pick reflects not only great storytelling but also the heart of how literacy supports language growth.

📚 Our Staff Favorites

1. Megan, COTA – The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

“I love the illustration and all the different activities I can plan with the book.”

2. Annika, SLP – Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes by Eric Litwin

“I love using this book, and other Pete the Cat stories, in therapy because of the repetition, predictability, and singing that keeps kids excited and engaged! This book provides fun ways to target vocabulary, simple sentences, and so much more.”

3. Alexis, SLP – Froggy Bakes a Cake by Jonathan London

“As a kid, I loved the adorable illustrations and the fun story centered around baking—something I enjoyed doing myself. Now, as an adult, I appreciate the humor and the valuable lessons it teaches, like problem solving, asking for help, and the satisfaction that comes from trying your best.”

4. Rachel, SLP – The Little Book Room by Eleanor Farjeon

“This enchanting collection of children’s short stories has always held a special place in my heart. I often return to its pages on rainy days, letting the magic of the tales brighten the gray. Choosing just one favorite book is nearly impossible—it feels like being asked to pick a favorite child—but this one will always be among the dearest.”

5. Jennifer, Receptionist & Reading Interventionist – Frindle by Andrew Clements

“I love this book because it celebrates how our language is shaped by those who use it. Words are added to the English language because of you and me!”

6. Olivia, SLP – Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

“This series sparked my love for reading at the age of 9, and I’ve been an avid reader ever since. Sometimes it just takes the right book, genre, or topic to spark a lifelong love. While the story is fantasy and full of the unbelievable, the characters and their stories are very relatable and lovable.”

7. Clara, Graduate SLP Student Clinician – Where Is the Green Sheep? by Mem Fox

“This book is very cute, engaging, and silly! I like to use it to support communication, including targeting colors, opposites, and ‘where’ questions.”

8. Kayleigh, OTR – Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

“I grew up reading and watching Harry Potter, and these stories sparked my love of reading!”

9. Lauren, SLP – The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen

“I love how this book naturally allows you to use voices. It’s such a fun, interactive story—kids love to chime in, especially with ‘Blub!’”

⭐ Bonus adult favorite: Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

“This beautifully written novel reminds us that aging doesn’t mean life stops—it shows how love, purpose, and adventure can exist at every stage of life.”

10. Kyle, IT – Dune by Frank Herbert & Foundation by Isaac Asimov

“Both series feature expansive world-building with technology that stretches across the universe and narrative arcs that span generations. I listen to them as audiobooks as my ‘therapy’ during my commute.”
