When a child struggles with reading, spelling, or writing, it can affect far more than academics. Confidence, motivation, and self-esteem often take a hit too. One approach that has stood the test of time—and science—is Orton–Gillingham.
What Is Orton–Gillingham?
Orton–Gillingham (OG) is a structured, multisensory, science-based approach to reading instruction. It explicitly teaches how sounds and letters work together, helping learners understand the why behind reading and spelling—not just memorize words.
OG instruction is:
Systematic and sequential – skills are taught in a logical order
Multisensory – learners use visual, auditory, and kinesthetic strategies
Explicit and direct – nothing is assumed or skipped
Individualized – instruction is tailored to the learner’s needs
This approach was originally designed to support individuals with dyslexia, but research and clinical experience show it benefits many learners—not just those with a diagnosis.
Who Can Benefit from Orton–Gillingham?
While Orton–Gillingham is widely known for helping individuals with dyslexia, it can be incredibly effective for:
Children who struggle with reading, spelling, or writing
Students who aren’t making progress with traditional classroom instruction
Learners who guess at words or avoid reading altogether
Kids who just need a more explicit, structured approach
You do not need a dyslexia diagnosis to benefit from Orton–Gillingham. If a child is struggling, evidence-based instruction matters.
Why Evidence-Based Instruction Is So Important
Not all reading programs are created equal. Many popular programs are marketed well—but lack strong scientific support.
At Marigold Speech, we believe:
Instruction should be science-based and evidence-based
Families should be cautious of programs without research to back them up
Effective intervention should also be accessible and affordable
Your child deserves instruction that is proven to work—not a one-size-fits-all solution.
