Halloween isn’t just for kids — it’s a time for connection, laughter, and self-expression for adults too! For those who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), holiday events like costume parties, community gatherings, or work socials can bring both excitement and communication challenges.

At Marigold Speech & Co., we believe everyone deserves full communication access — and that includes festive fun. Here’s how adults using AAC can prepare, participate, and thrive this Halloween season.

🎭 1. Plan Ahead for Communication Success

Preparation builds confidence. Before heading out, think about what kinds of interactions you’ll likely have — greeting friends, ordering food, or joining in conversations.

✅ Pro tip: Create a Halloween-specific page on your device with quick-access phrases such as:

  • “Your costume looks great!”

  • “What inspired your costume?”

  • “Can I grab a photo with you?”

  • “That’s my favorite Halloween movie too!”

If your device supports recorded messages or sound effects, add a few themed touches for fun!

👻 2. Keep Communication Accessible (Even in Costume!)

Costumes are part of the fun — but they shouldn’t hide your voice. Choose outfits and accessories that keep your AAC system within reach.

🎃 Tips for accessibility:

  • Use a crossbody strap or harness to keep your device secure.

  • Avoid fabrics that interfere with touch screens or switches.

  • Decorate your case with light-up or themed elements to make it festive and functional.

If you use a low-tech backup (like a printed communication board), clip it to your costume or carry it on a lanyard.

🕯️ 3. Build Comfort and Confidence

Social events can feel overwhelming — especially when sensory input or background noise is high. Set yourself up for success by:

  • Bringing a supportive friend or communication partner

  • Taking quiet breaks when needed

  • Letting others know you use AAC

Most people are curious and want to connect — your communication system is your bridge to inclusion.

🍬 4. Celebrate Communication Wins

At Marigold Speech & Co., we celebrate every communication success — from trying a new phrase to confidently using your device in public.

Progress isn’t linear, and every small step counts. Whether you greet someone new, order a snack independently, or simply carry your device proudly — these are all wins worth celebrating.
