'Tis the season for gift-giving, and with toys in every store, it’s the perfect time to find something that will promote language development across different age groups. This post could’ve easily been so much longer, but here are some toy ideas for key developmental stages.
👶 Infants and Toddlers (0-3 Years)
When selecting toys for babies and toddlers, ask: Is it safe if it ends up in their mouth? Look for toys that encourage sensory exploration and offer opportunities for labeling. Choose items that involve cause and effect, and think of words to use when describing the toy—colors, sounds, actions, and locations. Examples: Soft rattles, bubbles, textured books, stacking rings.
👧 Preschoolers (3-5 Years)
For preschoolers, ask: Does the toy have a goal or purpose? Toys that allow for pretend play or building (with your help) help expand vocabulary as kids describe actions or scenarios. Games that encourage imaginative play or teamwork are excellent for building communication skills. Examples: Pretend play sets, interactive sound books, animal figurines.
👦 Elementary Kids (5-8 Years)
Elementary-aged children thrive on competition and problem-solving, so look for games or toys that challenge them to think critically and communicate clearly. Can they use descriptions to solve problems? Toys that encourage description, perspective-taking, and cooperative play help children build both social and academic communication skills. Examples:Board games, puzzles, building kits.
