Enjoy Summer. Practice Communication. Feel Good.

If you are living with aphasia, you know that communication can be hard — but you also know that every word, gesture, and connection matters.

August is the perfect time to enjoy the sunshine, spend time with people you love, and keep your brain and language strong through simple, everyday activities.

The good news?

You can practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing while doing fun, meaningful things that bring joy this August. Ask your speech pathologist to personalize this list to your needs.

Here are 10 easy, low-stress activities made just for YOU — to help you enjoy the end of summer and keep communication going, one word at a time. 💛

1. 🌞 Sit Outside

Go in your yard or sit on a porch.

Talk about what you see and hear:

“Bird.” “Hot.” “Sun.”

Point. Gesture. Use your notebook or phone if needed.

2. 📸 Make a Summer Memory Book

Print pictures from summer.

Put them in a small album or scrapbook.

Talk about each one:

“Me and Sarah.” “Good day.” “Ice cream!”

3. 🧺 Have a Picnic

Make a simple lunch. Sit outside or on the floor.

Say or point to the food: “Apple.” “Juice.” “Yum!”

Practice: “Please.” “More.” “All done.”

4. 📚 Go to the Library

Look at books or magazines.

Choose a topic you like: sports, animals, recipes.

Try to read some words.

Say: “I like this.”

5. 🎶 Listen to Music

Play your favorite songs.

Sing along if you can!

Music helps your brain — and it feels good.

Talk about it: “Happy.” “Old song.” “Dad liked this.”

6. 🎨 Draw or Paint

Use paper, chalk, or paint.

Draw people, places, or feelings.

Say the words as you draw: “House.” “Dog.” “Blue.”

7. 🥕 Go to a Market

Visit a farmers market or grocery store.

Say “Hello!” or “Thank you!”

Point to what you want. Try: “Big tomato.” “Too much.”

8. 🧠 Play a Word Game

Play a game like matching cards, memory, or word bingo.

Or listen to a podcast like Ask Me Another with a friend.

Try to answer or guess together!

9. 🚗 Go Somewhere New

Take a short trip — to a park, a lake, or a store.

Plan it together.

Use a map, pictures, or calendar to talk about it.

Practice: “Let’s go.” “Too far.” “I like it.”

10. 🗓️ Get Ready for Fall

Use a calendar to talk about the month.

Say the date. Count the days.

Talk about plans: “Doctor Tuesday.” “Visit Mom.” “Fall soon!”

❤️ Keep Talking Every Day

Talking in real life is the best practice.

Use speech, gestures, writing, or a device.

All communication counts!
